 1. FIRST and ALWAYS create a backup of your BBS before upgrading. Generally
upgrading goes pretty smooth, but there is always the chance of something
going wrong whether it is Mystic or operator error!

 2. There is no automatic upgrade process. The process is to install the full
installation to a temporary directory, so that you have access to the
latest version of the files. Then follow the upgrade instructions provided
below for your specific version. Usually this just means replacing new
binary files contained in the new alpha. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL OVER
    YOUR EXISTING SETUP!

 3. REVIEW THE WHATSNEW.TXT for this alpha. The WHATSNEW is structured to show
what has been added/fixed between alphas, and also provides documentation
    for new or changed features.

 4. REMEMBER #1 TO BACKUP YOUR BBS DIRECTORY! :)

 .-----------------------------------.
 | UPGRADING FROM 1.12 A4 TO 1.12 A5 |-------------------------
 `-----------------------------------'

  - Replace all binary executable files
  - Delete CFGROOT.AN1 from your data directory
  - Copy CFGROOT1.ANS from the A5 data directory into your data directory

 .-----------------------------------.
 | UPGRADING FROM 1.12 A3 TO 1.12 A4 |-------------------------
 `-----------------------------------'

  - Just replace the old A3 .EXE files with the A4 versions to upgrade.

If you are upgrading from a version prior to A3 then you need to copy over
the A4 binaries, add all new/changed prompts, copy the new A4 protocol.dat,
recompile MPL files, and then run update.exe to upgrade data files to A3+

 .-----------------------------------.
 | UPGRADING FROM 1.12 A2 TO 1.12 A3 |-------------------------
 `-----------------------------------'

  - Make sure you do a FULL BACK UP your system because there are many data file
changes in this version, and a large amount of rewrites to things behind the
scenes. Once you upgrade there is no going back unless you restore a
    backup.

  - Replace all old .EXE files with new ones from A3 (do not forget MPLC and MIDE
    in the scripts directory).

  - Update the following changed prompts into your data\default.txt file and any
    other prompt sets you're using:

; Press ENTER to start file transfer &1=selected protocol
; First word is input chars, followed by display text
      065 SQ |CR|09Press |01[|15ENTER|01/|15S|01]|09tart or |01[|15ESCAPE|01/|15Q|01]|09uit your |15|&1 |09transfer: |XX

; Message from another node footer. First word contains input keys, followed by prompt
      145 RC |CR|09Node Message: |01[|10R|01]|09eply, |01[|10C|01]|09hat, or |01[|10ENTER|01/|10Continue|01]|09: |15

  - Copy update.exe into your root Mystic directory and run it one time. This
will perform various work on your data files for the new version. You can
    delete update.exe now.

  - Recompile all MPL programs that you use (mplc -all in the scripts
    directory)

  - The protocol format has changed, and it is recommended you copy over the
new protocol.dat from A3, especially if you do not use other external
protocols. Note that the file format has changed, so you must have
already ran upgrade.exe before you can copy the A3 protocol.dat over.

  - If you use the a preset upload base in the File Base Settings make sure it
is pointing to the correct file base, as the numbering is now done by the
    the unique base ID.

 .--------------------------------.
 | UPGRADING FROM 1.11 TO 1.12 A2 |----------------------------
 `--------------------------------'

  - Copy over new binaries (do not forget mide and mplc in scripts!)

  - Recompile all MPL programs (mplc -all in scripts) (not sure if needed)

  - Replace UNUSED prompt #315 in your default.txt (and any other themes)
    with this one:

; Ask for character translation (DOS CP437 or UTF8)
; &1 = Detected terminal type (or Unknown)
        315 |CR|14[|150|14] MS-DOS CP437|CR[|151|14] UTF-8|CR|CRSelect Terminal Codepage [|15Enter = CP437|14]: |XX

  - The default protocol.dat has been updated to include the new internal Xmodem,
Ymodem, Zmodem so if you want to use them you can copy the protocol.dat from
the A1 installation over your old one.

  - There are some minor additions to MUTIL.INI please see the whatsnew.txt
and/or look at the new MUTIL.INI for more information.

 | UPGRADING FROM 1.10 OR ANY 1.11 ALPHA TO 1.11 |----------------------------
 `-----------------------------------------------'

  - Copy over new binaries (do not forget mide and mplc in scripts!)
  - Recompile all MPL programs (mplc -all in scripts)

 Release notes and other changes:

Prompt #355 has changed to include a (D)raw Mode option. This should have
been updated in the default 1.10 installation but I forgot to do it. If you
are updating, you may want to update prompt #355 to include (D)raw mode.

Likewise, the default FSHELP.ANS file has been updated to include the CTRL+T
option in the FS editor which toggles in and out of Draw mode. This stuff
was in 1.10 but the defaults were never updated.

This version was mostly a bug fix release, with the exception of the new ANSI
embedded messages. The 1.12 version is planned to have massive changes, like
that of 1.10. Stay tuned and enjoy!

  4. There is no direct upgrade path for 1.09 without going through the ALPHA upgrades. This is due to there being no known 1.09 Sysops anymore so time spent maintaining that upgrade would be a waste.
  5. At the end of the upgrade file a list of all new prompts for this version of Mystic will be maintained should you be missing any, or the upgrade calls for new prompts.

Recompile your MPL programs using MPLC -all or whatever

New program called NODESPY is now included Updated some MPL (to-prompt, usage, etc)

UPGRADING FROM 1.10 ALPHA 15/16 to 1.10 ALPHA 17

This should be a simply binary replacement. Simply perform the installation to a temporary directory and then copy over the newer binaries (don't forget MPLC and MIDE in the scripts directory).

Also, MIDE now has a configuration file (mide.ini) that you may wish to copy from the new install.

Recompile your MPL programs just to be safe. I can't remember if that needs to happen for this version or not.

Note that this version has internal Zmodem, but it still has some problems with certain clients. It may be best to stick with SEXYZ or some other protocol driver for now.

If you are using something PRIOR to alpha 15, you need to find the correct section to get to that level.

UPGRADING FROM 1.10 ALPHA 11 - 14 TO 1.10 ALPHA 17

If you are upgrading from 1.10 ALPHA 11-14 then you need to replace all of the binaries, recompile all MPL programs (mplc -all), and add/recompile new prompts.

IN ADDITION THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT

You will need to copy CvtMenus to your menus directory and run it only once so that your menu files are converted to the format used in ALPHA 15+. Once this is done you can delete this program.

Also, there are new versions of BlackJack.mpl and Usage.mpl and also TO-PRMPT is now included in the Mystic distribution.

UPGRADING FROM 1.09 TO 1.10 ALPHA 17

The following instructions are for upgrading your current 1.09 release of Mystic BBS.

!!! THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT UPGRADE YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE A FULL BACKUP OF YOUR !!! CURRENT SYSTEM IN CASE THERE ARE PROBLEMS.

In addition, the MPL language has significantly changed in this release. If you are using a lot of MPL modules, they will need to be upgraded to new versions. The MPL syntax has been standardized to be consistant with Pascal compilers, so the syntax will not be changing every couple of releases as it has in the past. It is a bunch of work now, but it means we won't be doing this again in the future!

  1. Install Mystic 1.10 into a temporary directory.
  2. Copy the following files from the temporary install directory to your BBS directory (replacing old executables where needed):
      MYSTIC.EXE
      MAKETHEME.EXE
      MBBSUTIL.EXE
      MUTIL.EXE
      MUTIL.CFG
      109TO110.EXE
      MYSTPACK.EXE
      MIS.EXE

3. Copy the following files from your temporary install SCRIPTS directory

into your BBS scripts directory (replacing old stuff).

      MPLC.EXE
      MIDE.EXE
      BBSLIST.MPS
      BULLETIN.MPS
      MPLDEMO.MPS
      MPLTEST.MPS
      BLACKJACK.MPS
      BLACKJACK.ANS
      RUMORS.MPS
      USAGE.MPS

4. Run MPLC -ALL in your BBS scripts directory to recompile all of your

MPL programs. If you use custom MPL programs some may not compile and will need to be upgraded.

5. Copy CFGROOT.ANS from your temporary install DATA directory into your

BBS data directory.

6. For each "language" you have installed (usually just default.txt) you

will need add new prompts listed at the end of this file. default.txt is found in your root BBS directory.

7. For each "language" you have installed (usually just default) you will

need to recompile the prompts using MAKETHEME. Do NOT use the old MAKELANG as it no longer is used with Mystic BBS.

MakeTheme compile default.txt

8. Copy ANSIGALH.ANS and ANSIGAL.ANS from the temporary install's TEXT

directory into your BBS TEXT directory.

9. In your main BBS directory execute 109to110.EXE MAKE SURE IF YOU ARE

RUNNING AN OPERATING SYSTEM THAT USES FILE SECURITY THAT YOU HAVE FULL ACCESS TO ALL FILES IN YOUR BBS DIRECTORIES. IF YOU DO NOT THE UPGRADE WILL FAIL AND YOU WILL HAVE TO RESTORE AND START OVER

10. Delete 109to110.exe

11. Copy CvtMenus program into your menus directory and run it ONE TIME ONLY

so that it will convert your menu files.

12. Delete CvtMenus.exe

13. Notes: The install program will attempt to delete the following unused

programs and files: wfcscrn.* from DATA, makelang.exe, mcfg.exe, .lng from DATA, node.dat from DATA. If these files still exists for some reason they should be deleted. MCFG AND MAKELANG ARE NO LONGER USED WITH MYSTIC

VERSION PRIOR TO 1.09

If you are using 1.07 you must upgrade to 1.08, and then 1.09 using those upgrade packages. And then you can follow the instructions for 1.09 to the latest alphas above.

IF you are using 1.08 ALPHAs you must FIRST upgrade to 1.08 full release, and then to 1.09 before following the instructions above.
